The Roots of Hockey on Full Display in Lakes Region

January 9, 2018. Gilford, NH.

The New England Wolves EHL & EHLP teams played in what is sure to become an annual game event.  The 2018 Outdoor Classic, played on the Arthur Tilton Ice Rink in Gilford, NH was the venue for a Blue vs Grey best of 3 series of games.

The rink, on Varney Point Road in Gilford overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee and across the street from Fay's Boat Yard, was built years ago for the community to enjoy.  It served as the Lakes Region's only rink with boards until the Merrill Fay Arena was constructed in 1997.

"I thought our teams competed hard all weekend and deserved a reward." commented Wolves GM/ Head Coach Andrew Trimble.  " We drew up teams by the EHL (Blake Harlow) and EHLP (Rob Lennox) captains and went at it."

Games were played 6 on 6 Full Ice.  It was a best of 3 series with each game decided by a first to 9 goal rule. "It was fast paced.  We took some sticks to the face." said DJ Schwenke after scoring the game winner.  Team Harlow wore vintage throwback Wolves Grey Jerseys, worn during their time as an independent team in Waterville Valley, and Team Lennox wore vintage Laconia Leafs Blue throwback jerseys.

Team Lennox won Game 1, before dropping to extremely close games (2 & 3), leading to the Team Harlow victory.  EHLP Head Coach & Grey Team player Tim Kunes commented, " Both teams played hard, but in the end the Grey team was too much to handle.  The team captain showed up wearing Wrangler jeans."
