The Wolves came out strong Wednesday afternoon at the Waterville Valley Ice Arena skating to a hard earned win against the divisional rival Vermont Lumberjacks.  The two teams battled up and down in the scoreless first period and early going of the second before Jeff Kirkwood put the home team ahead 1-0 at 12:46 of the middle frame.  The line of Kirkwood, Jake Landry and Tucker Johnson applied heavy offensive zone pressure before the goal and the puck ended up on Defenseman Eric Boyda’s stick at the blue line.  Boyda changed the angle and fired it on net where Kirkwood refused to be denied banging home a rebound in the paint.  Landry also picked up an assist on the play.  The hard working goal inspired the Wolves and they went up 2-0 exactly three minutes later on a penalty shot goal by Clay Plyler.  Ryan Dunn took a neutral zone feed from Brian Cameron and found Plyler streaking at the offensive blue line.  Plyler was hauled down from behind resulting in the penalty shot call.  Vermont fought back at this point and scored on the power play with 7:55 left in the period when Sean Winikates took a nice weak side pass and fired it past Wolves goaltender Eric Bogart who had no chance.  The two teams traded punches until late in the period when Ryan Dunn stole an errant Vermont pass and promptly slid it over to Brian Cameron who drilled it home with only 43 seconds left in the frame.  The Wolves seized momentum at this point and came out hard in the third applying pressure that Lumberjack goalie Anthony Giordano proved up to the task keeping his team within reach with several outstanding saves.  Eric Bogart was also on his game making two scintillating point blank saves with Vermont on the power play. Ryan Dunn sealed it for the Wolves with 2:07 left when he beat two defenders, skated the puck over the red line and scored into the empty net. Eric Bogart earned the win in goal stopping 30 Vermont shots. “This was our best team effort of the year with contributions from every player” stated Coach Jacobs following the game.  Next up for the Wolves is the East Coast Wizards Friday afternoon at 4:00 PM in Waterville Valley.
